Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-West Pacific, primarily found in the coastal reefs of Indonesia. Inhabits shallow, coral-rich slopes and rocky crevices at depths of 2 to 20 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pseudochromidae. Features a slender, elongated body built for quick maneuvers. Grows to a maximum length of 7 cm.

Social Behavior: Exceptionally aggressive and territorial. Boldly defends its chosen cave and will relentlessly bully similarly sized or shaped tankmates.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is entirely brilliant, solid electric blue with violet undertones under good lighting. No reliable external differences between sexes, though males may have longer fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 120 liters. Must feature plenty of rocky crevices and caves to establish clear territorial boundaries.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Provide frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and high-quality pellets. Feed 2 times daily.

Water Quality: Robust and highly adaptable. Maintain temperature at 22-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at SG 1.020-1.025. Moderate current.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Do not house with other dottybacks or small, peaceful species like firefish. Best kept with active fish like tangs. Will eat small ornamental shrimp.

Aquarium Breeding: Egg depositor. The female lays a sticky ball of eggs inside a cave, which the male fertilizes and guards until they hatch.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. The primary risk is to other tankmates due to its fierce aggression. Ensure the tank has a secure lid.
