Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Red Sea. Inhabits coral-rich reefs, often sheltering among the branches of Acropora corals at depths of 2 to 15 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pseudochromidae. One of the smallest dottybacks, reaching a maximum length of 5 cm. Slender body structure.
Social Behavior: Territorial and semi-aggressive. Shows aggression towards conspecifics but is generally more tolerant of unrelated tankmates than other dottybacks.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is dark blue-black to jet black, highlighted by brilliant neon blue stripes on the head and gill covers. No sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 80 liters with plenty of live rock crevices and caves for shelter. Excellent for nano reef tanks.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Provide frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and pellets. Known to consume flatworms (planaria) in the aquarium.
Water Quality: Standard marine parameters. Maintain temperature at 22-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at SG 1.020-1.025.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with corals. May bully small, peaceful species like firefish. Keep with active tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. The female deposits eggs in a cave, which are guarded by the male until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and disease-resistant. High jumping risk; ensure the aquarium is fully covered.
