Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Western Indian Ocean, common in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, and south to Sri Lanka. Inhabits shallow reefs rich in branching corals at depths of 1 to 25 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the genus Pseudochromis. Grows to a maximum length of 10 cm (4 inches). Features a slender, elongated body shape with sharp teeth.

Social Behavior: Highly aggressive and territorial. Will actively hunt or harass smaller, passive tankmates, particularly if introduced after it has established its territory.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning coloration: vibrant golden-orange to reddish body with iridescent neon-blue stripes running along the dorsal ridge, gill covers, and fin edges. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Needs at least 120 liters of tank volume with extensive live rock forming complex cave systems and passages. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumps.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Eagerly consumes frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and high-quality pellets. Excellent biological control for bristleworms and flatworms.

Water Quality: Highly resilient to varying conditions. Standard parameters: temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe with corals. Highly incompatible with passive fish, small gobies, and firefish. House only with robust, active tankmates and introduce last.

Aquarium Breeding: Occasional. The male courts the female into a cave where she deposits a ball of eggs. The male guards and aerates the nest until they hatch.

Risks and Diseases: High jumping risk. Exceptionally disease-resistant but poses a severe stress risk to less aggressive tankmates.
