Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Western Pacific. Inhabits outer slopes of coral reefs rich in hard corals of the Coral Sea down to depths of 55 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Labridae. Reaches about 12 cm. Slender and streamlined body, large eyes, and double caudal fin lobes in adult males.

Social Behavior: Active and peaceful swimming fish. Does not bury itself in the sand unlike other wrasses, but creates a protective mucus cocoon to sleep among rocks.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Fabulous coloration: pink-golden body striped with a series of longitudinal blue lines and red markings on the head. Fins edged in yellow and metallic purple.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 200 liters (55 gallons) rich in rocks arranged in a barrier reef with many open passages and shaded hiding places.

Diet and Feeding: Planktivorous carnivore. Feed with mysis, brine shrimp, high-quality flake foods, and small floating or slow-sinking pellets.

Water Quality: Temperature 22-27°C (72-80°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Needs good water quality and excellent oxygenation.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Does not bother hard or soft corals, or medium-sized ornamental crustaceans. Excellent tankmate for community aquariums.

Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduction is not successfully documented in home aquariums. In the wild, they spawn in pairs releasing pelagic eggs.

Risks and Diseases: Jumps frequently, especially if startled or at night. It is mandatory to equip the aquarium with a fine protective mesh lid.
