Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Native to the West-Central Indo-Pacific, especially around the Philippines, Indonesia, and Sulawesi. Inhabits outer reef slopes and sheltered coastal reefs rich in soft corals, at depths of 4 to 45 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the genus Cirrhilabrus (fairy wrasses). Reaches a maximum length of about 8 cm (3.1 inches). Features well-developed dorsal and anal fins.

Social Behavior: Very peaceful and active. Can be kept singly or in a harem consisting of one male and several females. Sleeps in a protective mucus cocoon wedged into rock crevices at night rather than burying in sand.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Coloration is highly variable. Males display vibrant patterns of red, yellow, and violet with colorful dorsal fins. Females are smaller, typically showing uniform reddish or orange colors.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 120 liters with plenty of live rock arranged to create caves and overhangs, plus ample open swimming space. A tight cover is mandatory as they are notorious jumpers.

Diet and Feeding: Planktivore. In captivity, feed small amounts 2-3 times daily of mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality flake or pellet food.

Water Quality: Maintain stable reef parameters: temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Completely reef-safe. Ignores corals and sessile invertebrates. Peaceful companion for other reef fish; avoid overly aggressive tankmates.

Aquarium Reproduction: Extremely rare in home aquaria. Group or pair pelagic spawners. Planktonic larvae require highly specialized rearing conditions and micro-live foods.

Risks and Diseases: Generally hardy. The greatest risk is escape through jumping. Subject to typical marine parasites if severely stressed by aggressive tankmates.
