Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Outer deep reef slopes of the Marshall Islands, at depths of 40 to 80 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Labridae. Rhomboid-like body profile when fins are fully spread. Grows up to 8 cm.
Social Behavior: Highly peaceful and active. They swim in the open water columns and adapt well to group life with one dominant male.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males are golden-orange with a maze of neon-purple markings. Females are lighter pinkish-yellow.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum 150 liters with live rock caves. Subdued lighting is preferred to replicate deep-water conditions.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Provide frozen mysis, artemia, calanus, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed twice daily.
Water Quality: High water quality and stable parameters. High protein skimming is necessary. Keep nitrates near zero.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with corals. Keep with other peaceful reef fish. Do not house with aggressive wrasses.
Aquarium Breeding: Pelagic spawner; not documented in captive environments due to tiny larvae size.
Risks and Diseases: Highly prone to jumping. Ensure a tightly fitting lid or mesh guard is installed.
