Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, inhabiting coral reefs, sandy flats, and lagoons up to 30 meters deep.

Taxonomy: Classified within the Diogenidae family. One of the largest hermit crabs, featuring heavily bristled legs and long eye stalks.

Social Behavior: Highly aggressive, solitary, and destructive. It will actively rearrange rockwork and knock over loose corals in search of food.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Striking bright red base color covered with numerous black-rimmed white spots. There is no visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Needs a spacious fish-only aquarium of at least 55 gallons with heavy, secure rockwork. They require open sandy areas.

Diet and Feeding: Voracious omnivore. It eats raw shrimp, chopped fish, mussels, and large sinking pellets. It will actively hunt snails for their shells.

Water Quality: Requires stable marine parameters: pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C, salinity 1.022-1.025, and heavy filtration to handle food waste.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Not reef safe. It will eat snails, small crabs, small sleeping fish, and tear up corals. Best kept with large, robust fish.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning in captivity does not result in survivable offspring due to their complex, long-lived pelagic larval stage.

Risks and Diseases: Destructive behaviors. Ensure a constant supply of larger empty shells to prevent them from killing snails or fighting.
