Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Common in various areas of the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the coasts of East Africa to the Philippines and Polynesia. Inhabits shallow, wave-swept outer rocky reefs.

Taxonomy: Member of the family Diogenidae. A large hermit crab species that can exceed 10 cm in size. Walking legs and claws are massive, covered in bristly bands. Grows to 10-12 cm.

Social Behavior: Strong, active, and invasive. Constantly climbs rockwork and can knock over unsecured corals or stones. Shows territorial and aggressive tendencies toward smaller tankmates.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular bright golden-yellow body coloration. The sensory bristles are also light yellow or cream-colored. Eyes are dark on light-beige stalks. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Requires a large tank of 50-70 gallons or more. Rockwork must be very stable and secure. Provide a deep sandy substrate and plenty of large replacement shells (e.g. Turbo).

Diet and Feeding: Voracious omnivore. Feeds on frozen mysis, krill, chopped mussels, clams, and fresh fish chunks. Accepts large sinking pellets and seaweed sheets.

Water Quality: Reef parameters. Salinity SG 1.021-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and elevated nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Not reef-safe. May prey on large live snails, starfish, and small sleeping fish. Keep only with large, robust fish.

Aquarium Breeding: Microscopic zoeal larvae are pelagic and require open ocean salinity to develop, making aquarium breeding unsuccessful under normal conditions.

Risks and Diseases: Low iodine or calcium leading to failed molts. Lack of suitable large replacement shells causes high stress. Highly sensitive to copper treatments.

Calcium and minerals
Fornire livelli stabili di calcio e carbonati per garantire una calcificazione efficace delle zampe robuste.
Molting
