Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to the Tuamotu Islands, north to Japan and south to Australia. Inhabits outer reef slopes rich in corals and rubble at depths of 6 to 40 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the genus Cirrhilabrus. Grows to a maximum length of about 12 cm (4.7 inches). Features prominent red eyes and a slender body with a lanceolate or truncate tail.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and very active swimmer. Often shy at first, but grows bold. Spends the night sleeping inside a protective mucus cocoon in the rockwork.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Varies significantly depending on geographical origin. Displays a base of green or reddish color with a distinct black oval spot on the tail base and electric blue markings. Dominant males show highly intense, exotic color patterns.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 200 liters with plenty of live rock for cover and ample open water for active swimming. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential to prevent jumps.

Diet and Feeding: Planktivore. Feed mysis, frozen brine shrimp, copepods, and small high-quality pellets 2-3 times daily.

Water Quality: Maintain stable reef parameters: temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent reef-safe choice. Completely safe with corals and common ornamental invertebrates. Male conspecifics will fight; keep only one male per tank.

Aquarium Reproduction: Highly challenging. Pelagic spawners. Males show off by flashing intense colors and dancing to attract females into the water column.

Risks and Diseases: High jumping risk, especially when startled. Prone to marine ich and skin infections if stressed by larger, aggressive tankmates.
