Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and Madagascar to Indonesia, north to southern Japan, and south to New Caledonia. Prefers deep sandy reefs and rubble zones at depths of 30 to 60 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Labridae family, genus Bodianus. Features a remarkably slender and elongated body compared to other hogfishes. Reaches a maximum size of 8 cm (3.1 inches).
Social Behavior: Active and moderately peaceful. However, it can show territorial behavior towards smaller bottom-dwelling fish. Bold and energetic.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is bright lemon-yellow or orange-pink with thin reddish horizontal stripes. Features two prominent black spots: one behind the eye on the gill cover and one on the tail base. No distinct sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Needs a tank of at least 150 liters with fine sand and live rock arranged to create numerous crevices. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Naturally feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Feed frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped krill, and small high-quality pellets twice daily.
Water Quality: Maintain stable reef parameters: temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe with corals. May prey on very small ornamental shrimp. Avoid housing with similar-shaped wrasses or other hogfish species.
Aquarium Reproduction: Unsuccessful in home aquaria due to its deep-water spawning habits.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. Primary risks include territorial behavior against new passive tankmates and escape through jumping.
