Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Central Pacific, mainly around the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. Inhabits rubble areas and outer reef slopes at depths of 10 to 90 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Pomacanthidae family, genus Centropyge. Reaches 8 cm (3.1 inches). Characterized by an oval brownish-orange body, electric blue fin margins, and a translucent tail.
Social Behavior: Active and constantly moving among rockwork. One of the more peaceful dwarf angelfish, though it will defend its shelter firmly.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Orange-brown or golden body, with anal and dorsal fins trimmed in electric blue, and yellow pectoral fins. Tail is translucent yellow. No sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 110 liters with plenty of live rock arranged to create swim-throughs and small caves for hiding.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds by grazing on live rocks. Offer spirulina, enriched dry foods (flakes or pellets), and frozen brine shrimp or mysis.
Water Quality: Stable temperature between 23°C and 28°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025, KH 8-12, GH 15-25. Keep water well-oxygenated.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Semi-aggressive. Compatible with most reef fish. Can be kept in pairs if introduced simultaneously in larger tanks.
Aquarium Reproduction: Protagynous hermaphrodite. Captive breeding successfully achieved by commercial operations; spawning occurs pelagically in the evening.
Risks and Diseases: Generally hardy and adaptable. May occasionally nip at corals if underfed or lacking natural algae to graze on.
