Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Northwest Pacific: Southern Japan, Ogasawara Islands, and Midway Atoll. Found in rocky and coral reefs down to 60 meters in cooler subtropical waters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Pomacanthidae family. One of the larger Centropyge species, reaching a maximum length of 15 cm.

Social Behavior: Solitary or forming small harems. Active, inquisitive, and highly territorial towards other dwarf angelfish.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Orange-yellow anteriorly, shading to dark blue-violet posteriorly. The head is covered with neon blue dots. Males display wider blue bands on the caudal and dorsal fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 250 liters with extensive rock structures offering caves and pathways. Open swimming area is necessary.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on algae, detritus, and sponges. Provide frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp), spirulina-based pellets, and sponge-enriched formulas.

Water Quality: Demands cooler subtropical water temperatures (20-25 °C). Avoid prolonged temperatures above 26 °C. pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe with caution. May nip at SPS/LPS corals and clam mantles. Do not house with similar-looking dwarf angelfish.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Spawning has been achieved in professional public aquaria, but not commercially available.

Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to thermal stress. Prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) if kept in warm water or stressful conditions.
