Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. Inhabits rocky ledges, vertical walls, and deep caves at depths ranging from 12 to over 180 meters in cool, current-swept waters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Previously placed in Holacanthus or Desmoholacanthus. Features a compressed oval body, growing to a maximum size of 18 cm.
Social Behavior: Primarily solitary or found in small harems. Shy and territorial toward conspecifics and other similarly sized angelfish.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pearly white-to-light grey body marked with a broad, white-edged black horizontal band running from the snout through the eye to the end of the dorsal fin. Anal and caudal fins feature broad black borders. No sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 400 liters with plenty of live rock to create caves and dark overhangs. Chilled water (20–24°C / 68–75°F) is essential; it does not tolerate standard high tropical temperatures. A secure lid is required.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivore/Specialized feeder. Feeds almost exclusively on sponges and algae in the wild. In captivity, it requires high-quality frozen sponge-based angelfish diets, mysis, and seaweed fed three times daily.
Water Quality: Demands pristine water and robust protein skimming. Temperature 20–24°C, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity SG 1.020–1.025, GH 15–25, and KH 8–12. High sensitivity to water parameters.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Semi-aggressive with similar species. Keep with peaceful tankmates. Reef-safe with caution: it may nip at LPS corals, zoanthids, and ornamental sponges.
Aquarium Reproduction: Extremely rare in home aquariums. Broadcast spawners in nature; limited success in commercial Hawaiian breeding projects.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation is a major threat if it refuses food. Decompression issues are common in wild-caught specimens. Highly susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) if stressed.
