Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Clipperton Island in the eastern tropical Pacific. Inhabits rocky reef habitats and steep slopes subjected to heavy surge at depths of 10 to 50 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Pomacanthidae. Features a deep, laterally compressed body with a prominent spine on the preopercle. Reaches up to 25 cm in length.
Social Behavior: Solitary and highly territorial as an adult. Juveniles show cleaning behavior toward larger reef fish. Highly aggressive to conspecifics.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is dark brownish-blue to violet, with a bright white blotch on the mid-flank. Caudal fin is bright yellow. No external sexual dimorphism is present.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a large tank of at least 600 liters with plenty of rock caves and open swimming channels. Ensure stable rock structures.
Diet and Feeding: Specialized feeder. Feed a mix of commercial sponge-based diets, marine algae, frozen mysis, and chopped seafood. Feed multiple times daily.
Water Quality: High water quality with vigorous current. Maintain temperature at 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at SG 1.020-1.025.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with large, active fish such as tangs, large wrasses, and damsels. Avoid other angelfish.
Aquarium Breeding: Not recorded in home aquariums due to extreme scarcity and high cost.
Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to Cryptocaryon and lateral line erosion. Varied diet and stable parameters are essential for prevention.
