Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa to Vanuatu, north to the Ryukyu Islands. Inhabits shallow, protected lagoons and flat inner reefs with algae growth at depths up to 20 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Balistidae. Features a robust, compressed body with a tough, leathery skin. Possesses a locking first dorsal spine. Grows up to 23 cm.

Social Behavior: Solitary, aggressive, and highly territorial. Bold and curious, it may bite hands or damage tank equipment like heaters or filter intake tubes.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is light tan or grayish dorsally, white ventrally, with a large, prominent dark brown-to-black patch on the lower belly. Blue and orange lines run across the head. No sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a minimum tank size of 350 liters. Provide sturdy rockwork and open swimming areas. Will rearrange the substrate and blow water currents at the sand.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates. Feed a variety of meaty foods such as unshelled clams, krill, table shrimp, crabs, and spirulina pellets. Feed 2 times daily.

Water Quality: Demands powerful filtration and protein skimming. Maintain temperature at 22-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Not reef-safe. Will eat all crustaceans, sea urchins, and mollusks. House with robust tankmates like groupers, tangs, and large angels.

Aquarium Breeding: Not bred in home aquaria. In the wild, they dig sandy nests and guard their egg clutches with extreme aggression.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. Ensure the aquarium is tightly covered. Monitor tank equipment closely for bite marks.
