Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widespread in the Mediterranean Sea and East Atlantic, from southern Sweden (rare) to Gabon. Inhabits rocky shores and Posidonia seagrass beds down to 120 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Labridae. Features a slender, cylindrical body. Reaches up to 25 cm in length in the wild, usually 15-20 cm in aquariums.

Social Behavior: Active, curious, and strictly diurnal. Instantly dives into the sand at night or when alarmed. Terminal males defend small groups of females.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Strong sexual dimorphism. Females and juveniles (initial phase) have brown backs with a white band. Spawning males (terminal phase) display a brilliant green-blue body, a zig-zag orange band, and a black spot near the pectoral fin base.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a temperate marine aquarium of at least 250 liters. A deep sand bed (6-7 cm) of fine sand is essential for sleeping. A secure lid is mandatory.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on small sea urchins, mollusks, and crustaceans. Accepts frozen foods like mysis, brine shrimp, krill, and prepared dry foods.

Water Quality: Suitable for cold/temperate setups: temperature 15-24 °C. Avoid keeping at tropical temperatures above 25 °C. Salinity SG 1.025-1.028 is preferred.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Not safe with small crabs, shrimps, or snails. Excellent for Mediterranean biotope setups with fast-swimming companions.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Spawns pelagic eggs in coastal waters. No captive breeding records exist in home aquaria.

Risks and Diseases: Mouth injuries if kept on coarse gravel. Extremely hardy against typical marine parasitic diseases if water quality is stable.
