Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Line Islands. Found on steep outer reef drop-offs at depths of 20 to 60 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Labridae. Also known as the Peppermint Hogfish. Features a slender, pointed snout and crescent-shaped caudal fin. Grows up to 10 cm.
Social Behavior: Solitary and active reef dweller. Can establish territories and behave aggressively toward similar-looking wrasses.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displaying vivid alternating red and white horizontal stripes, with a dark brown-to-black crescent shape at the base of the tail fin. No visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands a tank of at least 150 liters with extensive rockwork to create caves and shaded overhangs. A tight-fitting lid is critical.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feeds on small micro-crustaceans. Feed frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and small pellets three times daily.
Water Quality: High water quality. Maintain temperature at 22-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at SG 1.020-1.025.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with corals. May prey upon small ornamental shrimp (e.g. sexy shrimp). Keep with active, moderately sized tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Not recorded in home aquariums. Broadcast spawners in nature.
Risks and Diseases: Jump hazard is high. Easily stressed by dominant fish; ensure plenty of hiding spots are available.
