Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Inhabits outer reef slopes, surge channels, and coral-rich lagoons with sandy patches down to 30 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the Labridae family. Features a moderately deep, compressed body shape. Reaches a maximum standard length of about 18 cm.
Social Behavior: Solitary and active diurnal swimmer. Constantly roams the reef searching for small prey. Can become territorial and aggressive towards similar species.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body has alternating green and red horizontal stripes. Juveniles show distinct black ocelli on the dorsal fin. Spawning males develop highly intricate green and pink facial patterns.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Needs a spacious tank of at least 300 liters. A deep, fine sand bed of 6-8 cm is critical for sleeping and refuge. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are active jumpers.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on benthic invertebrates. Accepts frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and prepared dry foods. Excellent for controlling pyramidellid snails and flatworms.
Water Quality: Maintain standard marine values: temperature 23-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Efficient filtration and protein skimming are required.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with robust, active tankmates. May prey on small ornamental shrimps, crabs, and snails. Avoid housing with passive fish or similar wrasses.
Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Sex change occurs from dominant female to male. Captive breeding has not been successful due to pelagic larval requirements.
Risks and Diseases: Lack of proper sand substrate causes severe stress and physical damage to the snout. Susceptible to external parasites under poor water conditions.
