Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Broadly distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the coasts of South Africa to southern Japan and the Great Barrier Reef. Inhabits shallow wave-swept reef flats and rocky shores.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae. Features a streamlined, muscular body adapted to withstand heavy surf. Reaches a maximum length of 12 cm.

Social Behavior: Diurnal and active swimmer. Spends daylight hours searching the reef structure for food. Males defend territories containing small harems of females.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Cryptic patterns with green, reddish, and brown mottled bands. Spawning males develop a bright pink cheek mark and vivid dorsal colorations, whereas females remain drab.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a tank of at least 200 liters with open swimming spaces and a fine sand bed of 5-8 cm for burying. A secure lid is mandatory to prevent jumping.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Readily accepts mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and pellet food. Aids in the biological control of flatworms and pest snails.

Water Quality: Maintain stable marine conditions: temperature 23-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Strong water flow is essential to replicate its natural environment.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe for reef tanks with caution. Peaceful with most fish, but may prey on tiny ornamental shrimps and snails. Avoid overly aggressive wrasses.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodites. Spawning in captivity is undocumented due to the complex pelagic larval phase.

Risks and Diseases: Stress from lack of proper substrate causes immunity issues. Vulnerable to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) during initial tank introduction.
