Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found in the Western Pacific, from the Philippines and Indonesia to the Solomon Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and sandy patches down to 30 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae. Features a laterally compressed body and small mouth. Reaches a maximum length of 12 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, timid, and strictly diurnal. Grazes constantly near the substrate. Instantly dives into the sand bed when threatened.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body color is black or dark brown, covered with numerous small yellow or white spots. Spawning males display iridescent green and red markings on their heads.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 200 liters with plenty of live rock and a deep (7-8 cm) fine sand bed. Coarse gravel must be avoided as it injures the fish. A secure lid is required.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on micro-crustaceans. Needs an established tank with a healthy copepod population. Supplement with frozen foods 3-4 times daily.

Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters stable: temperature 23-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Strong filtration and skimming are highly recommended.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. Best kept with quiet, non-aggressive species. Bold, territorial tankmates will keep this fish buried and stressed.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Broadcast spawners with pelagic larvae. Captive spawning has not been successfully reared in home aquariums.

Risks and Diseases: Starvation is a primary concern during acclimation. Susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) if subjected to stress or poor water conditions.
