Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indo-Pacific, commonly found in Indonesia, the Philippines, Palau, and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits shallow, wave-swept surge zones on coral reefs, particularly reef crests.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified under the family Pomacentridae, subfamily Pomacentrinae. The genus Neoglyphidodon contains robust, deep-bodied damselfishes known for their extreme territoriality.
Social Behavior: Solitary and highly aggressive. Juveniles shelter closely within reef cracks, while adults maintain large territories, aggressively attacking any competitors or fish entering their area.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Juveniles are exceptionally colorful: deep black body marked by iridescent neon-blue vertical stripes and a bright yellow to white saddle on the back. Adults fade to a plain, dark greyish-black.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 200 liters due to its size and highly aggressive adult behavior. Set up with stable rockwork providing deep caves and shelter.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. In the wild, it feeds on plankton and benthic algae. Accepts high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and spirulina-based foods.
Water Quality: Standard marine conditions: temperature 23-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with strong water movement and efficient filtration.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly aggressive. Intolerant of most tankmates. Only keep with large, aggressive, or robust species such as tangs, triggerfishes, and larger angelfishes. Do not keep in pairs.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. The male clears a nesting area on a hard rock surface, courts the female to deposit adhesive eggs, and guards the nest fiercely until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Extremely hardy and resistant to common diseases. The primary risk is severe physical trauma or death caused to other fish in the aquarium.
