Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Western-Central Pacific Ocean, including the reefs of the Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, and Micronesia. Found on seaward reef slopes.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae. Features an oval, laterally compressed body. Reaches a maximum standard length of 6 cm. Sleek scale pattern.

Social Behavior: Active reef inhabitant. Displays moderate territorial behavior, establishing and defending personal cave domains against similar-looking tankmates.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Bicolor pattern: brilliant neon-blue upper body, with a bright golden-yellow belly, anal fin, and tail. No distinct external sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a minimum tank size of 80 liters with structured rockwork to provide retreat caves and reduce territorial stress.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous diet. Readily accepts dry flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and foods containing marine algae.

Water Quality: Stable reef parameters: temperature 24-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with moderate filtration and current.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Compatible with active, robust reef tankmates. Avoid housing with similar blue-and-yellow colored species to prevent territorial squabbles.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawns adhesive eggs on rocky surfaces. The male guards and fans the nest site until the larvae hatch.

Risks and Diseases: Highly resilient and hardy species with low susceptibility to common marine diseases. Excellent choice for beginner marine aquarists.
