Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indo-Pacific, ranging from Indonesia to the Solomon Islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to Rowley Shoals and the Great Barrier Reef. Found in silty reefs and patch reefs on sand.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the family Pomacentridae, subfamily Pomacentrinae. Features a moderately elongated, compressed body profile with a terminal mouth and flexible fins.

Social Behavior: Territorial species associated with small rock outcrops or coral branches on sandy slopes. Generally less aggressive than other members of the genus Pomacentrus.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pale yellow or uniform yellow-cream body color. Juveniles have a distinctive black ocellus ringed in blue on the soft dorsal fin, which typically fades with age.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 100 liters with rock structures providing caves and overhangs, situated above a sandy substrate to replicate its natural environment.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on algae and plankton in nature. Readily accepts flakes, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, mysis, and vegetable preparations.

Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters: temperature 23-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with standard filtration and moderate water movement.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Semi-aggressive. Will guard its immediate territory. Best kept in a community tank with fish of similar size and robust temperament. Avoid docile, slower tankmates.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. The male prepares a nesting site, typically on a hard sheltered surface, courts the female, and defends the adhesive eggs until they hatch.

Risks and Diseases: Extremely hardy and forgiving of minor water quality fluctuations. The primary risk is housing with predatory fish that can consume it.
