Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Central Pacific. Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, living on deep rocky slopes and outer reefs rich in coral, usually between 20 and 80 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Labridae. Reaches about 10 cm. Slender and compressed body with a small mouth equipped with small sharp canines.
Social Behavior: Very peaceful fish, swimming in groups composed of a dominant male and several females in mid-water above the corals.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning coloration: intense fire-red body on the back with golden and yellow shades on the flanks and belly. Males present bright red fins edged with blue.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Tank of at least 200 liters (55 gallons) rich in rocks arranged in a barrier with many swimming passages. Prefers not overly bright lighting.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Provide a varied diet including mysis, brine shrimp, frozen Cyclops, and vitamin-enriched dry foods.
Water Quality: Temperature 22-26°C (72-78°F, prefers cooler/normal reef temps), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Nitrate stability is required.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Does not harm corals, clams, or small shrimp. One of the best fish for community reef aquariums.
Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduction is not successfully documented in home aquariums. In the wild, they perform courtship dances rising up the water column.
Risks and Diseases: Excellent jumper. It is essential to seal the top of the tank with a fine mesh or complete cover.
