Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Western Pacific, including Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa. Inhabits deep seaward reefs, typically at depths of 70 to 120 meters, among coral rubble.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Labridae. Possesses an elongated, laterally compressed body with a pointed snout. Reaches a maximum length of about 12 cm. Characterized by well-developed dorsal and caudal fins.

Social Behavior: Generally peaceful toward other genera, but males are markedly territorial and aggressive toward conspecifics and other members of the Cirrhilabrus genus.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular vibrant pinkish-red coloration with a prominent yellow or orange longitudinal band. Adult males display much more intense colors and longer fins than females.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 250 liters with plenty of live rock and shaded caves. A tight-fitting lid is essential as it is a notorious jumper.

Diet and Feeding: Planktivorous carnivore. Feed frozen mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellet food enriched with vitamins.

Water Quality: Demands stable marine parameters: temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.5, salinity 1.020-1.026. The water must be well-filtered and oxygenated.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Suitable for reef aquariums with medium-sized peaceful fish. Avoid aggressive tankmates or other fairy wrasses similar in shape and color.

Aquarium Reproduction: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Aquarium reproduction is undocumented; dominant males control a harem of females.

Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to transport stress which can cause mouth infections. Prone to skin parasites if water quality is suboptimal.
