Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Southwestern Pacific, primarily from eastern Australia (New South Wales) to New Caledonia. Prefers mixed rubble and sand zones on deep reefs, from 10 to 55 meters depth.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Labridae, genus Macropharyngodon. Has an elongated oval, compressed body shape. Reaches a maximum size of 10 cm (3.9 inches).

Social Behavior: Peaceful and non-aggressive. Spends its daytime foraging near the substrate. It buries itself completely in the sand bed for sleeping at night.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a dark brownish-black back, bright yellow belly, and a black spot near the operculum. Males show increased orange and blue facial markings.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum size of 200 liters (50 gallons). A deep bed of fine, sugar-sized sand (6-8 cm / 2.5-3 inches) is vital. Secure screen lids are required as they will jump.

Diet and Feeding: Specialist micro-carnivore. Lives on tiny benthic prey found in mature live rock. Supplement with mysis, cyclops, and enriched brine shrimp multiple times a day.

Water Quality: Requires stable parameters: temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Do not use copper-based treatments.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Perfect for passive reef setups. Avoid aggressive tankmates like large tangs that can bully this species during feeding. Excellent with gobies.

Aquarium Breeding: Unreported in captive environments. In nature, they engage in group pelagic spawning.

Risks and Diseases: Highly vulnerable during shipping and acclimation. High risk of starvation in immature systems. Ensure clean, deep sand to prevent skin infections.
