Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Central-Western Pacific, mainly known from Indonesia, Philippines, and southern Japan. Inhabits deep caves and crevices of coral reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Labridae family, genus Wetmorella. One of the smallest wrasses, reaching 6 cm (2.4 inches). Compressed reddish-brown body with white stripes and dark ocelli.

Social Behavior: Extremely shy and elusive, spending most of its time hidden inside rock caves or crevices, swimming with a characteristic hovering motion.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Reddish-brown body with two vertical white bands and prominent black ocelli (eyespots) ringed in white on the dorsal and anal fins. No obvious sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 60 liters with a massive amount of live rock arranged to form mazes, caves, and dark crevices. A secure lid is mandatory.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Naturally feeds on benthic micro-fauna. Feed with small frozen crustaceans like copepods, baby brine shrimp, mysis, and finely chopped foods.

Water Quality: Stable temperature 23°C - 27°C, stable pH 8.1 - 8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025, KH 8-12, GH 15-25. Gentle, regular filtration.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful and shy. Keep only with small, docile tankmates (gobies, micro-fish). Easily bullied or outcompeted for food by active, fast-swimming species.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Aquarium reproduction has not been documented due to the species' reclusive habits and shyness.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of starvation if housed with aggressive feeders. Prone to jumping out of the tank if startled by sudden movements outside the aquarium.
