Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Western Central Pacific, from Indonesia and the Philippines north to Taiwan and south to northern Australia (Great Barrier Reef). Inhabits coral reef flats and mixed sand/rubble areas at depths of 5 to 30 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the genus Cirrhilabrus. Reaches a maximum size of 12 cm (4.7 inches). Features an elongated body, rounded tail, and elegant fins.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, active, and bold. Swims continuously in the water column hunting for food. Sleeps in a protective mucous cocoon hidden in rock crevices.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display a dark blue or green head, a reddish-orange patch on the anterior sides, and scales outlined in blue. Females are smaller and mostly reddish-pink with a black spot on the tail base.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 200 liters with plenty of open swimming area and live rock for shelter. The tank must be fully covered to prevent jumps.

Diet and Feeding: Planktivore. Feed several times daily with small amounts of frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, copepods) and high-quality flake or pellet food.

Water Quality: Maintain typical reef parameters: temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent community reef fish. Safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates. Introduce females before the male if maintaining a harem.

Aquarium Reproduction: Highly challenging. Males display by flaring fins and swimming in loops to attract females. Larval rearing is extremely difficult.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of jumping when startled or during transition periods. Prone to marine ich if kept with aggressive or territorial tankmates.
