Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Tropical Indo-Pacific. Inhabits deep rocky walls and outer sandy slopes rich in sponges off the Maldives and Sri Lanka between 25 and 50 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae. Reaches about 8 cm. Elongated body, large eyes ringed with yellow, and broad fins.
Social Behavior: Peaceful swimming fish. Lives in mid-water forming small groups. Does not sleep in the sand but produces a protective mucus cocoon under ledges.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning coloration: deep ruby-red body on the back, fading to bright orange and yellow on the flanks. Males present elongated pelvic fins and showy courtship displays.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 150 liters (40 gallons) rich in rocks arranged in a barrier with many hiding places and open swimming lanes.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feed with small frozen foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, Cyclops, and copepods. Easily accepts small-sized pellets.
Water Quality: Temperature 22-27°C (72-80°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Good skimming keeps the water clear and oxygenated.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Does not touch hard or soft corals, or beneficial invertebrates. Can fight with males of the same or similar species.
Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduction is not successfully documented in home aquariums. In the wild, they release pelagic eggs that rise to the surface.
Risks and Diseases: Excellent jumper. Cover the aquarium perfectly with a fine mesh screen or a protective lid to prevent losses.
