Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western-Central Pacific, primarily native to Indonesia and the Philippines. Inhabits shallow coastal reefs with mixed sand and rubble at depths of 2 to 25 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Labridae family, genus Halichoeres. Reaches up to 18 cm (7 inches) in length. Named after the prominent dark spot located at the pectoral fin base (axil).
Social Behavior: Active and inquisitive. Constantly patrols the tank looking for food on rockwork. Buries into the sand bed to sleep at night or when frightened.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Reddish-brown body with horizontal rows of small bluish-green spots. Head features orange/pink scrollwork. Males are more intensely colored.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 300 liters (80 gallons) with open sand areas. A fine sand substrate of at least 5 cm (2 inches) depth is required. Secure tank lids are mandatory.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on benthic invertebrates. Feed mysis, brine shrimp, krill, and chopped seafood. Helps keep flatworms and small pests under control.
Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters: temperature 22-27°C (72-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Efficient filtration is needed.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Good with medium-sized active fish. May consume small decorative shrimps and clean-up crew members. Completely safe with corals.
Aquarium Breeding: Unreported in captive environments. In nature, they spawn pelagic eggs with a long larval stage.
Risks and Diseases: Abrasions and infections can occur if kept on coarse gravel instead of sand. Vulnerable to skin parasites if stressed during introduction.
