Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-Pacific: distributed from South Africa and Madagascar to Palau, Taiwan, and southern Japan. Lives exclusively along very deep outer reef slopes, in caves and rocky crevices at depths of 70 to 300 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Serranidae, genus Odontanthias. Features a tall, robust, and laterally compressed body with developed dorsal spines and a luxurious swallowtail caudal fin. Reaches 15 cm SL.
Social Behavior: Peaceful but more solitary than other anthias. Hovers near deep caves and can show mild intraspecific territoriality. Protogynous hermaphrodite.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Extraordinary pattern with a pink or violet body decorated with large yellow or brown checkered spots. Fins are yellow and fuchsia with elongated tips. Minimal dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 450 liters. As a deep-water species, it prefers dim lighting (or abundant dark caves) and controlled cooler temperatures. Secure cover is required. High jumping risk.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Unlike smaller anthias, it accepts larger frozen foods like mysis, krill, brine shrimp, and small pieces of fish or shrimp meat. Feed twice daily.
Water Quality: Pristine water quality. Ideal temperature 22-26°C (sensitive to high tropical temperatures above 27°C). pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. Suitable for reef tanks with hard corals. May compete with or intimidate smaller or shyer anthias. Avoid large predators.
Aquarium Breeding: Very difficult in aquaria. No known cases of captive breeding due to its deep-water lifestyle.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to marine ich if temperature fluctuations are excessive. Risk of decompression issues from wild collection.
