Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Southwestern Indian Ocean: endemic to Mauritius. Lives on rocky walls and steep outer ledges at significant depths between 50 and 70 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Serranidae. Stocky, compressed body with large red eyes and pectoral fins modified for resting on the rocky reef. Reaches approximately 5 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and sedentary, spending daylight hours perched on rocks monitoring the surrounding area. Territorial with its own species.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular and bright pattern: brilliant red body with geometric yellow spots and vertical white stripes. Translucent fins shaded with orange. Dimorphism is absent.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 100 liters well-arranged with live rock. Low risk of jumping, but a cover is recommended. Moderate water movement.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feeds easily in captivity on frozen mysis, copepods, and brine shrimp. Feed 1-2 times daily.
Water Quality: Deep-water, cooler species. Keep temperature between 18°C and 26°C (avoid high tropical peaks). pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe with corals. May eat tiny ornamental dwarf shrimp. Ideal for calm community setups.
Aquarium Breeding: Not documented in captivity due to the larval development in deep cold waters.
Risks and Diseases: Robust species once acclimated. Sensitive to initial stress parasites and stable temperatures that are too high.
