Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to southern Japan, New Caledonia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Populates sloped reef walls and deep cave entrances.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Commonly known as the Blue-stripe Pygmy Goby. Slender body, large eyes, and translucent exoskeleton. Reaches approximately 3 cm in length.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and highly gregarious. Unlike other ground-dwelling gobies, it hovers in small groups in the water column very close to rock faces, often vertically.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Semi-transparent body with amber or reddish hues, divided longitudinally by a striking electric-blue or neon-purple line. No obvious sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 40 liters with plenty of vertically arranged rocks and shaded areas. Provide moderate but constant water movement.

Diet and Feeding: Planktivorous carnivore. Requires live or fine frozen microscopic foods fed several times a day, such as copepods, rotifers, and fresh cyclops.

Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. Excellent water oxygenation is essential.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Great with calm and tiny fish. Should be introduced in groups of at least 4-6 specimens to encourage natural schooling behavior.

Aquarium Breeding: Rare in the hobby; spawns adhesive eggs under rock ledges, but larval development is extremely complicated.

Risks and Diseases: Highly vulnerable to unprotected powerheads and excessive currents. Requires a tight lid to prevent fatal jumps.
