Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific: from the Philippines and Indonesia to the Solomon Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Found in shallow sandy lagoons.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Gobiidae family. Laterally compressed body with prominent fan-like dorsal fins featuring twin dark eyespots. Grows to 7 cm (2.8 inches).

Social Behavior: Peaceful and slow-moving. Lives in mated pairs. Sifts sand constantly. Mimics a crab by waving its dorsal fins when threatened.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Cream-white body speckled with orange-brown blotches. Dorsal fins have large black ocelli ringed in orange. No visible sexual differences.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 100 liters (26 gallons). Requires a mature, well-established fine sand bed rich in microfauna. Secure rockwork structure.

Diet and Feeding: Extremely difficult. Relies on microfauna extracted from the sand. Must be fed target feedings of frozen copepods, baby brine, and fine mysis 3-4 times daily.

Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters stable: temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Shy and defenseless. Avoid aggressive or fast food-competitors. Best kept in a species-specific setup or with tiny peaceful fish. Reef safe.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawns in pairs inside sand burrows, sealing themselves in. Rearing the larvae is highly difficult in home aquaria.

Risks and Diseases: Extremely high risk of starvation in new or sterile sand beds. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and poor water quality.
