Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-Pacific, widely distributed from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia. Inhabits coral-rich lagoons and seaward reefs with wave action at depths of 1 to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Labridae family, genus Thalassoma. Features a streamlined, muscular body designed for continuous swimming. Reaches a maximum size of 20 cm (8 inches).

Social Behavior: Bold, dominant, and fast-swimming. Spends all day in open water and can be highly competitive during feeding. Retires to rock crevices at night; rarely buries in sand.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is light green or silver with pink/red stripes on the head and six black vertical bars on the upper half. Terminal males show intense blue-green facial patterns.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Needs a long aquarium of at least 450 liters (120 gallons) with open swimming area. Rocks should form large, secure caves. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely necessary.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous predator. Requires chunks of shrimp, squid, clams, small fish, and large pellets. Supplement with frozen krill and mysis. Helps control crab populations.

Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters: temperature 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Strong filtration and skimming are required.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Unsuitable for mixed reef tanks. Best kept in FOWLR setups with large, aggressive companions like tangs, triggerfish, and groupers. Will eat small fish and shrimp.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning has not been recorded in home aquaria. In the wild, they perform group pelagic spawning.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and disease-resistant. The main risks are jumping out of uncovered tanks and aggression toward submissive tankmates.
