Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to southern Japan and the Great Barrier Reef. Found specifically in the recesses of seaward reef corals.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Known scientifically as Gobiodon spilophthalmus. Stocky, scale-less body with small eyes set high. Maximum length is around 4 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, benthic, and sedentary. Spends the vast majority of its life within the branches of the same coral, defending it from direct competitors.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Gray-brown or reddish ground color, dotted with tiny bright blue or white spots. Males and females look identical, sequential hermaphrodites.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a small reef tank of at least 40 liters. It is essential to include small-polyp stony (SPS) corals for their natural perching and shelter.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Requires fine frozen foods such as brine shrimp nauplii, cyclops, copepods, and marine protein powders.
Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. Monitor ammonia and nitrites closely.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly suited for nano aquariums. May cause slight local recession on Acropora tissues where it routinely perches.
Aquarium Breeding: Bidirectional hermaphrodite. Pairs spawn eggs wrapped in a spiral band around the branches of the host coral.
Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to water parameter swings and skin fungal infections if their protective mucus layer is damaged.
