Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Distributed in the Western Indian Ocean, including East Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, and the Gulf of Oman. Found on rocky reef slopes and current-swept channels from 10 to 50 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Features a deep, compressed body with a distinct preopercular spine. Reaches about 25 cm in length.

Social Behavior: Solitary or found in pairs. Territorial species that adapts well to captivity in larger setups. Shows high intraspecific aggression.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is dark greyish-black with a light grey reticulated honeycomb pattern. Caudal fin is bright yellow. Juveniles are black with blue vertical stripes. No sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 450 liters. Provide a solid live rock structure to create shelters and extensive open swimming zones.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Wild diet includes sponges, tunicates, and algae. Feed frozen mysis, brine shrimp, krill, and formulas enriched with sponge and spirulina.

Water Quality: Maintain standard marine values: temperature 24-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Regular water changes and protein skimming are key.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe with caution. Likely to nip at soft and stony corals. Best housed with active, robust tankmates like tangs or wrasses.

Aquarium Breeding: Broadcast pelagic spawners. No captive breeding records exist in home aquaria due to larval rearing complexity.

Risks and Diseases: Vulnerable to Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE) if sponge and algae intake is insufficient. Susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon).
