Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and south along the East African coast to Madagascar. Inhabits silty coastal coral reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Pomacanthidae family, genus Pomacanthus. Reaches 50 cm (20 inches). High, elongated body, dark grayish-blue color with an irregular vertical yellow crescent.

Social Behavior: Large solitary fish, highly territorial. Claims and patrols a wide rocky area. Constantly scrapes benthic algae and organisms from rocks.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dull brownish-blue body with a bright, irregular yellow vertical bar on the mid-body. Tail is pale. Juveniles show vertical blue and white stripes. No sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a large tank of at least 800 liters to support its adult size. Vast open areas for swimming and sturdy rocks for natural foraging.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Requires sponge-rich prepared foods and algae. Supplement with nori sheets, spirulina, chopped shrimp, and high-quality frozen marine preparations.

Water Quality: Temperature 22°C - 28°C, stable pH 8.0 - 8.5, salinity 1.020-1.026, KH 8-12, GH 15-25. Heavy biological filtration and high-flow filtration are necessary.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Semi-aggressive. Highly territorial toward other large angelfish or conspecifics. Not reef-safe; will consume LPS/SPS corals and clam mantles.

Aquarium Breeding: Not reproduced in home aquariums. Pair spawners releasing pelagic eggs at dusk in the open water.

Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to marine ich and HLLE if sponge and vitamin requirements are not met. Using premium foods containing sponge reduces disease risks.
