Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Northwest Pacific, including southern Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan. Inhabits rocky, algae-rich reefs and coastal waters at depths of 5 to 15 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Features a deep, round-bodied shape as an adult. Reaches up to 22 cm in length.
Social Behavior: Solitary and territorial. Can be aggressive towards closely related species. Moderately peaceful with other types of fish.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is brownish-orange with several striking horizontal neon-blue stripes running along the sides. Caudal fin is yellow. No sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Needs a tank of at least 500 liters with robust rockwork and open space. Prefers cooler subtropical temperatures (20-25°C / 68-77°F).
Diet and Feeding: Provide a diverse diet including specialized sponge-based commercial foods, marine algae, and frozen foods such as mysis. Feed 3 times daily.
Water Quality: High water quality and aeration. Maintain temperature at 20-25°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at SG 1.020-1.025.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Avoid keeping with other angelfish of the same genus. Suitable for tanks with tangs and wrasses. May nip at corals.
Aquarium Breeding: Extremely rare in captivity. Broadcast pelagic spawner.
Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to Cryptocaryon. Quarantine and a varied diet help maintain immune system health.
