Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the subtropical reefs of the Southwestern Indian Ocean, primarily off the coast of South Africa (Natal) and southern Mozambique. Inhabits rocky reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Features a deep, compressed, and robust body. Reaches a maximum standard length of 25 cm. Prominent preopercular spine.

Social Behavior: Solitary and territorial species that dwells in deep reef drop-offs. Primarily feeds on sponges and tunicates in its natural marine habitat.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Striking coloration: upper body is bright yellow with irregular vertical black bars, while the lower body is pale silvery-grey. Tail is yellow with black margins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a large, well-established aquarium of at least 500 liters with plenty of live rock to encourage grazing behavior.

Diet and Feeding: Specialized omnivore. Requires dedicated angelfish food preparations containing sponge material, supplemented with frozen mysis, krill, and marine algae.

Water Quality: Subtropical requirements: water temperature must be kept cool, between 20 and 24 °C. Maintain pH 8.1-8.4 and salinity 1.020-1.025.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Moderately territorial. Can be kept with robust reef fish. Caution is advised in reef tanks, as it may nip at stony corals and clams.

Aquarium Breeding: Captive breeding has not been successfully achieved. In nature, they spawn in pairs, releasing pelagic eggs into ocean currents.

Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to nutritional deficiencies and elevated temperatures. Maintaining stable, cool water and a varied diet is vital for survival.
