Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Samoa, north to southern Japan, and south to Australia. Inhabits outer reef slopes, clear lagoons, and drop-offs at depths of 3 to 60 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Grows to a maximum length of 26 cm. Features a compressed oval body, large scales, and a small mouth equipped with rows of brush-like teeth.
Social Behavior: Diurnal species, usually found solitary or in pairs. Exhibits moderate-to-strong territoriality as it matures, especially toward other angelfish species.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a brilliant yellow body with electric blue-to-purple lips. Has three distinct black markings: one spot on the forehead and two behind the head. The anal fin is bordered in broad black. Juveniles lack the adult head spots. No obvious sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a large aquarium of at least 450 liters with vast open swimming spaces and sturdy live rock structures. A tight-fitting lid is necessary to prevent jumping.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivore/Specialized feeder. Feeds primarily on sponges and tunicates in the wild. In aquariums, it must be offered high-quality frozen foods, spirulina, nori, and sponge-enriched angelfish diets.
Water Quality: Demands stable parameters. Temperature 23–28°C, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity SG 1.020–1.025, GH 15–25, and KH 8–12. High sensitivity to nitrate and organic wastes.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Semi-aggressive as an adult. Best kept as the sole angelfish in the system. Not reef-safe: it will likely nip at LPS, SPS corals, sponges, and clam mantles.
Aquarium Reproduction: Extremely difficult in home aquariums. Cultured commercially on a small scale by specialized facilities.
Risks and Diseases: Dietary transition of wild-caught specimens can be highly challenging. Prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) and skin infections if stressed or water quality is poor.
