Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widely distributed in the central and western Pacific Ocean, from Cocos-Keeling to the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia. Inhabits coral-rich lagoons and seaward reefs.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Pomacanthidae family. Features an oval-shaped, compressed body with a distinct preopercular spine on the cheek. Grows to approximately 14 cm (5.5 inches).
Social Behavior: Naturally occurs in small harems consisting of one male and several females. Territorial in captivity, especially towards other dwarf angelfishes.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is a uniform bright lemon yellow. Accented by a vibrant blue ring around the eyes and a blue line on the gill covers and fin margins. Males are larger.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a mature tank of at least 150 liters (40 gallons) with extensive live rock structures forming pathways, caves, and overhangs for security.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Grazes constantly on marine algae and microfauna. Feed a balanced diet of spirulina flakes, high-quality pellets, frozen mysis, and brine shrimp.
Water Quality: Keep marine parameters stable: temperature 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Good protein skimming is necessary.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Not considered fully reef safe. Prone to nipping at large polyp stony (LPS) corals, soft corals, and clam mantles. Keep with active, non-angelfish species.
Aquarium Reproduction: Extremely difficult. Spawning involves rising in the water column to release pelagic eggs. Raising the tiny larval stages requires specialized rotifers and copepods.
Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to marine ich and skin parasites. A stress-free environment and vitamin-enriched foods are key to maintaining health.
