Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-West Pacific: from East Africa and Madagascar to Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Guinea. Inhabits murky rocky reefs and harbor areas.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Pomacanthidae family. Broad-bodied and laterally compressed. Equipped with a preopercular spine. Grows up to 45 cm (18 inches).

Social Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive towards other angelfishes. Solitary or found in mated pairs. Patrols the water column continuously.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Golden-brown body with curved, horizontal neon-blue stripes. Marked with a small blue ring above the gill cover. Juveniles are dark blue with white vertical lines. No sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a massive tank of at least 800 liters (210 gallons) with large, open swimming areas and heavy rockwork forming secure caves.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous sponge-feeder. Feed specialized angelfish foods containing marine sponges, along with mysis, chopped shrimp, nori, and spirulina.

Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters: temperature 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Powerful protein skimming is required.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Not reef safe. Will nip at stony and soft corals, clams, and anemones. Best kept in a fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) system.

Aquarium Breeding: Unrecorded in domestic systems due to broadcast spawning habits and the large size of adult specimens.

Risks and Diseases: Prone to marine ich, velvet, and HLLE. Stable water parameters and vitamin-enriched sponge diets are essential preventive measures.
