Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the Indian Ocean, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Sri Lanka and western Indonesia. Found in sheltered coral reefs and deep lagoons.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the Acanthuridae family. Closely resembles Z. veliferum but is distinguished by more intricate freckles and lighter tail spots. Grows up to 40 cm (16 inches).

Social Behavior: Bold and territorial. Established adults will fiercely defend their feeding territories, especially against other herbivores in the tank.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features alternating dark and light vertical bands, covered in fine yellow lines and golden freckles on the face and lower body. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a massive tank of at least 600 liters (150 gallons) with plenty of open swimming space and heavy rockwork for hiding and algae grazing.

Diet and Feeding: Heavily herbivorous. Provide constant access to dried nori sheets, spirulina-based pellets, flakes, and macroalgae. Supplement with occasional frozen mysis.

Water Quality: Requires clean, highly oxygenated water with strong currents. Keep temperature at 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly aggressive towards other Zebrasoma species. Best kept as the sole tang or alongside tangs of different genera in very large systems. Reef safe.

Aquarium Breeding: Unreported in domestic setups. Spawns openly in water columns, producing pelagic eggs that drift in offshore currents, making rearing impossible at home.

Risks and Diseases: Prone to Cryptocaryon irritans and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE). High-quality herbivorous nutrition and stable water quality are vital preventive measures.
