Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Primarily found in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Persian Gulf. Inhabits coral-rich reefs and rocky areas exposed to strong water currents.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Acanthuridae family. Disc-shaped, laterally compressed body. Features a sharp, retractable spine (scalpel) on the caudal peduncle. Grows to 22 cm (8.7 inches).

Social Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive towards similar herbivorous species, especially other Zebrasoma tangs. Solitary in nature, defending feeding territories on the reef.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Rich deep purple to blue-violet body with dark freckles on the head. Caudal and pectoral fin tips are bright yellow. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a spacious tank of at least 400 liters (100 gallons, minimum 5 feet long) with plenty of open swimming space and rockwork covered in natural algae growth.

Diet and Feeding: Primarily herbivorous. Diet must consist of nori sheets, spirulina, macroalgae, and premium herbivore flakes/pellets. Feed small portions multiple times daily.

Water Quality: Demands pristine, well-oxygenated water with strong flow. Keep temperature at 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Aggressive towards other Zebrasoma. Can be housed with other surgeonfish genera (e.g. Ctenochaetus) in large tanks. Best introduced last.

Aquarium Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria due to pelagic spawning habits requiring vast vertical water columns for egg dispersal.

Risks and Diseases: Highly susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE). Requires high-quality, vitamin-enriched foods and stable parameters.
