Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Paracanthurus hepatus, commonly known as the Blue Tang or Palette Surgeonfish, inhabits the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the coasts of East Africa to Japan, New Caledonia, and the Great Barrier Reef. It predominantly populates outer reef zones and current-swept coral terraces at depths between 2 and 40 meters. In these highly oxygenated habitats, juveniles seek refuge among the dense branches of hard corals (such as Acropora), while adults form small schools or swim alone along the vertical drop-offs of the reef, utilizing strong currents for zooplankton foraging.
Taxonomy and Morphology: The sole member of the genus Paracanthurus within the family Acanthuridae, this species is clearly distinguished from other surgeonfish by its more oval and laterally compressed, less discoidal morphology. The distinctive anatomical feature of the family, the retractable caudal scalpel located on the caudal peduncle, is extremely sharp and coated with a toxic sheath in some populations, used as a defensive weapon against predators. The hydrodynamic body is a perfect evolutionary adaptation for sustained swimming in strong ocean currents.
Social Behavior: In the wild, it exhibits gregarious behavior, especially in juvenile and subadult stages, forming schools that graze together to reduce predation risk. In captivity, however, intraspecific territoriality increases exponentially if space is limited. It is a very active pelagic species that ceaselessly explores the entire water column; juveniles show a curious defensive behavior known as "playing dead," wedging themselves sideways into rock crevices when threatened and slightly blanching their coloration to camouflage.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The livery is unmistakable and vibrant: the body is dominated by a deep cobalt blue, traversed by an intricate palette-shaped black pattern (hence one of its common names) extending from the eye to the tail. The caudal fin and pectoral fins are tinted with a bright, iridescent yellow. Sexual dimorphism is virtually absent and indistinguishable to the naked eye; the only minimal difference is sometimes found in the size of adult specimens (males tend to be slightly larger) and, during the reproductive phase, in the abdominal swelling of gravid females.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Being a tireless swimmer and a fish of considerable size (up to 25-30 cm as an adult), it requires large tanks (minimum 400-500 liters, preferably at least 150 cm long). The setup must provide ample free swimming areas in the front and upper sections, paired with massive rear rockwork (hardscape) full of caves, crevices, and passages to offer secure nighttime refuges and reduce stress. Lighting should simulate shallow reefs, also promoting the growth of benthic algae essential for its diet.
Diet and Feeding: Unlike many other Acanthuridae which are strictly herbivorous, P. hepatus is an omnivore with a strong inclination toward plankton in nature. In the aquarium, its diet must be extremely varied to prevent color fading and the development of deficiency diseases (such as Head and Lateral Line Erosion or HLLE). It must receive daily marine algae (nori, spirulina) supplemented with high-quality protein foods like mysis, enriched brine shrimp, krill, and commercial preparations enriched with garlic and vitamin C to boost the immune system.
Water Quality: This species is notoriously intolerant of suboptimal water conditions. It requires oversized chemical and biological filtration, a highly efficient protein skimmer, and very strong water currents, simulated via wavemakers to ensure high oxygen saturation (high ORP). The ideal temperature ranges between 24 and 26°C, salinity at 1.024-1.026 SG, and nitrate and phosphate levels must be kept close to zero to avoid prolonged stress.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Generally peaceful with other species and 100% reef safe, it does not bother corals or invertebrates. However, it can show fierce territorial aggression toward conspecifics or other surgeonfish, especially those with similar coloration or morphology, if introduced later. To house multiple Acanthuridae together, the tank must be enormous, and introductions should be made simultaneously.
Aquarium Breeding: Captive breeding is extremely complex and almost exclusive to specialized commercial breeders and research institutions. In nature, they are pelagic spawners: they reproduce in groups at dusk, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column. The pelagic larva (acronurus) goes through a prolonged oceanic development phase that makes home breeding practically impossible due to the microscopic and specific dietary needs of the early larval stages.
Risks and Diseases: It is universally considered an "Ich magnet" (Cryptocaryon irritans). Its skin is thinner than other marine fish and produces less protective mucus, making it extremely vulnerable to ectoparasites, marine velvet (Amyloodinium), and HLLE. A rigorous quarantine before introduction into the main display is absolutely mandatory. They are sensitive to copper-based treatments, which must be dosed with extreme caution while constantly monitoring the therapeutic concentration.
