Achilles Tang

Acanthurus achilles

The Ich Magnet (10 inches / 25 cm). One of the most breathtakingly beautiful fish, but notoriously frail. A single drop in temperature will cause a massive Ich (White Spot Disease) outbreak.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the central Pacific Ocean, heavily concentrated around Polynesia, Micronesia, and the Hawaiian Islands. Strictly inhabits "surge zones" of the coral reef crest, where ocean swells crash violently, saturating the water with oxygen.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Known as the Achilles Tang, Acanthuridae family. Oval, strongly laterally compressed body, pointed snout. It possesses a retractable and extremely sharp bony scalpel on the caudal peduncle, used as a deadly territorial defense weapon. Reaches about 25 cm (10 inches).

Social Behavior: Highly territorial, hostile and hyper-dynamic. Patrols the rocks swimming incessantly at great speed. Does not tolerate the presence of other Tangs, especially congeners (Acanthurus), which it will mortally attack with tail strikes.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Crazy and sought-after livery. Velvety raven black background, outlined with white and orange on the fins and tail. The irrefutable distinctive trait is a colossal neon orange oval patch on the caudal peduncle, around the spur. Juveniles lack this patch. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Fish for experts only and large aquariums (minimum 500-600 liters, at least 180 cm long). Absolute necessity of reproducing its surge environment: cyclopean wavemakers are needed to generate very strong chaotic currents. Abundant live rock for constant grazing.

Diet and Feeding: Hyper-vegetarian grazer. Given the incessant movement, it burns a ton of calories. Offer daily sheets of Nori algae (green, brown, red) fixed on a clip. Abundantly support the diet with foods enriched with garlic, spirulina, and frozen mysis to strengthen the precarious immune system.

Water Quality: Intolerant towards the slightest drops in oxygenation and chemical alterations. Purest marine water mandatory: SG 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, dKH 8-12. Oversized skimmers necessary. Temperatures over 26°C are very dangerous as they knock down the concentration of dissolved oxygen in salt water.

Compatibility and Tankmates: MUST be introduced last in a well-established tank, being the undisputed bully of the tank. Prohibited the addition of Powder Blue or Whitecheek Tangs. Reef-safe and calm towards sessile organisms and small fish (Damsels, Blennies, Anthias).

Aquarium Reproduction: Totally impossible to breed in the amateur circuit. Tangs are "broadcast spawners" (pelagic spawners in the open sea) whose tiny larvae spend months at the mercy of ocean currents before settling on shore.

Risks and Diseases: Universally labeled as the biggest "Ich Magnet". A thermal shock or stress triggers lightning-fast and catastrophic outbreaks of White Spot Disease (Cryptocaryon irritans). Strict prophylaxis and long health quarantines before insertion into a community tank are mandatory.
