Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Hawaii and the Great Barrier Reef. Populates the upper and outer zones of the reef in large schools, where waves break violently and the sun favors massive algal growth on the rocks.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the Acanthuridae family (Surgeonfish). It features a massive ovaloid body, laterally compressed, designed to cut through very strong ocean currents. Armed with an extremely sharp venomous bony spur on the caudal peduncle. In the wild it reaches 38 cm (15 inches).
Social Behavior: Legendary aggressiveness. Although in nature it assembles in huge "grazing schools" to overwhelm the territorial defenses of farming damselfish, in captivity (closed spaces) it becomes a solitary and bloodthirsty tyrant towards any other tang or herbivorous fish.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Extraordinarily flashy (Clown Tang). The belly is an opalescent light blue/white, while the upper half of the body is traversed by dazzling horizontal neon blue and golden yellow stripes, bordered with black. The pelvic fins are orange. No sexual dimorphism.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: Demands huge tanks (minimum 600-800 liters / 160-200 gallons, length 200+ cm / 7+ feet). Neurotic, tireless and very fast swimmer: huge open spaces are needed and, above all, a frightening current (flow) generated by industrial movement pumps (gyre) and very high oxygenation.
Diet and Feeding: Pure herbivorous grazer. Incessantly devours filamentous algae from live rocks. In the aquarium its diet must be centered on large sheets of Nori algae tied to a clip, in addition to spirulina-based feeds and blanched vegetables. Supplement with krill and mysis.
Water Quality: Requires perfect reef parameters: Salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, constant dKH around 8-10. It does not tolerate the accumulation of nutrients (nitrates/phosphates) nor temperatures that consistently exceed 26-27°C (79-81°F), which would lower its immune defenses due to less oxygenation.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Strictly the last fish to be introduced. Prohibit pairing it with the Sohal Tang, with which it would engage in duels to the death. Relatively calm (if ignored) towards small schooling fish, wrasses, anthias and all coral invertebrates (100% Reef Safe).
Aquarium Reproduction: Never achieved in home tanks. They are pelagic spawners that gather in very dense schools at dusk to simultaneously release eggs and sperm into the water column, leaving the larvae at the mercy of the open ocean for months.
Risks and Diseases: In addition to the extreme predisposition to stress-induced Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) and Oodinium, the greatest risk is linked to its lethal aggressiveness and its poisonous scalpel, capable of inflicting very painful cuts even on the hands of the careless breeder.
