Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Hawaii and French Polynesia. Inhabits deep lagoons and seaward coral reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Acanthuridae family. Oval, laterally compressed body with extraordinarily large dorsal and anal fins. Grows up to 40 cm (16 inches) in size.

Social Behavior: Generally peaceful towards non-tangs. Highly territorial and aggressive towards other Zebrasoma species. Solitary or forms pairs in reef environments.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body displays alternating dark brown, yellow, and light bands. Tail fin is bright yellow. No visible external differences between sexes.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a massive tank of at least 600 liters (150 gallons) to accommodate its large adult size. Provide ample open swimming area and strong rock structures.

Diet and Feeding: Voracious herbivore. Diet must center around nori sheets, spirulina, macroalgae, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Feed small amounts multiple times daily.

Water Quality: Demands excellent filtration and high oxygenation. Maintain temperature at 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Do not mix with other Zebrasoma. Compatible with dwarf angelfishes, wrasses, and small reef fish. Safe for reef corals and invertebrates.

Aquarium Breeding: Unreported in private aquaria. Spawning occurs in open water columns, releasing buoyant eggs that float in ocean currents.

Risks and Diseases: Prone to marine ich and Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE). Requires high-quality nutrition, vitamin supplements, and stress-free conditions.
