Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: The Yellow Tang (*Zebrasoma flavescens*) is an iconic, highly active, and exceptionally vibrant marine teleost completely synonymous with the saltwater aquarium hobby. While historically reported in scattered Indo-Pacific locations, they are effectively endemic to the shallow, sun-drenched, algae-rich coral reefs surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. Their natural biotope is defined by highly oxygenated, turbulent waters crashing over massive lava-rock and stony coral structures.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Scientifically classified within the Acanthuridae (Surgeonfish) family, they possess an instantly recognizable morphology. Fully mature adults reach 18.0 to 20.0 centimeters (7.0-8.0 inches) in length. The body is exceptionally laterally compressed (disk-like) with a prominent, elongated snout perfectly adapted for plucking hair algae from deep crevices. As Surgeonfish, they possess a razor-sharp, retractable, calcified scalpel (spine) on each side of their caudal peduncle used for brutal defense.
Social Behavior: They are hyper-active, highly aggressive grazers. In the wild, they form massive, golden schools that swarm the reefs, indiscriminately stripping algae from the rocks. In the confines of a marine aquarium, however, they are notoriously territorial and aggressive toward other Tangs (especially those with similar body shapes). They spend the entire day constantly swimming back and forth across the rockwork, relentlessly picking and scraping at invisible micro-algae.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sexual dimorphism is visually non-existent outside of subtle behavioral cues. Their coloration is the reason for their legendary status. The entire body, from the tip of the elongated snout to the trailing edge of the caudal fin, is an absolutely flawless, solid, blindingly bright canary-yellow. They lack any stripes, spots, or gradients. The only disruption to this brilliant yellow is the stark, contrasting, bone-white scalpel sheathed at the base of the tail.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: The aquarium architecture MUST accommodate their hyper-active swimming and massive dietary need for algae. A minimum 380-liter (100-gallon) marine aquarium is strictly required.
CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: The tank MUST provide massive, unobstructed lengths of open swimming space (minimum 4-5 feet long) combined with extensive, mature live rock formations. They require extremely strong, turbulent water flow (provided by massive wavemakers) and heavy oxygenation to thrive.
Diet and Feeding: They are obligate, heavy-duty herbivores.
CRITICAL WARNING: The absolute leading cause of long-term deterioration in Tangs is a lack of marine algae. While they will greedily consume meaty foods, their diet MUST consist primarily of plant matter. They MUST be offered sheets of dried marine macro-algae (Nori) clipped to the glass daily. They eagerly consume high-quality spirulina pellets and algae flakes. A lack of greens will cause devastating Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE).
Water Quality: Originating from the pristine Hawaiian reefs, they require flawless marine water chemistry. They demand stable tropical heat (24-27°C / 75-81°F). Specific gravity (salinity) MUST be maintained precisely between 1.020 and 1.025. They require hard, highly alkaline water (pH 8.1 - 8.4). Flawless biological filtration and a massive, oversized protein skimmer are unequivocally mandatory, as their constant, heavy grazing produces an enormous amount of biological waste.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Compatibility requires careful planning. They are 100% reef-safe and an absolute blessing for controlling algae in SPS reef tanks. They are excellent companions for Clownfish, Blennies, Wrasses, and Anthias.
CRITICAL WARNING: They are highly aggressive toward other Surgeonfish. Never mix them with other *Zebrasoma* species (like Purple or Sailfin Tangs) unless the tank is massive (200+ gallons) and they are introduced simultaneously. The Yellow Tang should be the LAST fish added.
Aquarium Breeding: Historically impossible, breeding the Yellow Tang in captivity is now one of the greatest modern triumphs of the marine aquaculture industry. Driven by Hawaiian export bans, specialized facilities now successfully breed them. They are pelagic spawners, releasing thousands of microscopic eggs into the water column. The larvae exist in an incredibly fragile, transparent, pelagic stage for months. Raising them requires industrial-scale plankton culturing and is entirely beyond the scope of home hobbyists.
Risks and Diseases: The absolute greatest physical risk is devastating infection from Marine Ich (*Cryptocaryon*) and Marine Velvet. Tangs possess very thin slime coats and are notoriously "Ich magnets"; they must be rigorously quarantined with copper before introduction. The second major risk is severe Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE), caused by poor diet (lack of Nori), stray voltage, or the heavy use of cheap activated carbon. Finally, be extremely careful handling them, as their tail scalpels will slice human skin deep.
